TreatyX: A living map of our lands forgotten history.

The History You Weren't Taught. The Map That Was Always There.

I am a sixth generation great grandson of Joseph Brant, Thayendanegea, a Mohawk leader whose legacy still shapes these lands. He fought, negotiated, and made impossible choices to secure a future for our people, but the promises of those treaties and the truths of our territories have long been hidden or ignored.TreatyX is my way of repairing that gap. Using the latest technology, I am working with Indigenous communities to overlay our original place names, stories, languages, and treaty boundaries onto the modern world so everyone can see whose land they’re on and why it matters. This is more than an app, it’s a living map, rooted in respect, built for reconciliation, and shaped by the voices of the Nations themselves. With TreatyX, we move beyond paper treaties and broken promises. We make our stories visible, our boundaries undeniable, and our futures stronger. This is the legacy I want to leave; this is how I honour my ancestor and all those who kept our knowledge alive. Honouring Our Ancestors by Restoring Indigenous Truths, One Map at a Time.

About

What is TreatyX, and How Does it Work?

TreatyX utilizes augmented reality technology to overlay historical information and landmarks onto your current location, allowing users to experience Indigenous history as never before.   TreatyX seamlessly integrates several core technologies:

  • Augmented Reality (AR): Using frameworks like ARKit (iOS) and ARCore (Android), the app anchors digital content to the physical world, making it appear as if the boundaries and labels are part of your environment.

  • Global Positioning System (GPS): This pinpoints your device's precise latitude and longitude.

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS): The app cross-references your GPS location with a sophisticated digital database of treaty boundaries and culturally significant sites.

  • Cloud-Based Media Storage: All audio stories, language pronunciations, and map data are stored securely in the cloud and streamed to your device on demand, ensuring the app remains lightweight and up-to-date.

In essence, TreatyX acts as a digital lens, using any mobile device to reveal the deep, layered history of the land, transforming an everyday view into a profound educational experience.

Who can use the app?

Of course. The TreatyX app is designed for a wide range of users, each with a unique reason to engage with it.

1. TreatyX is designed for anyone with a smartphone and a curiosity about the true history of the land beneath their feet. Its value is universal, serving purposes from personal enlightenment and cultural preservation to formal education and professional development. It is a tool for every Canadian to build a more informed and respectful relationship with the places they call home.

2. Students and Educators (K-12 & University):
TreatyX is a powerful classroom tool. Teachers can use it to make lessons on history, social studies, geography, and Indigenous studies tangible and immersive. Instead of just reading about Treaty 6, students can use the app on their school grounds to see its boundaries and hear stories from that nation. It supports curriculum requirements for truth and reconciliation education directly and engagingly.

3. Indigenous Community Members:
For Indigenous peoples, especially youth, the app serves as a platform for cultural reaffirmation and language learning. It is a digital repository of their community's knowledge, allowing them to connect with stories from their Elders and see their history validated on a modern map. It can be a tool for cultural revitalization and pride.

4. Professionals in Government & Corporate Sectors:
Public servants and corporate employees, especially those in sectors like land development, resource management, and government relations, can use TreatyX for education and due diligence. It provides immediate, accessible knowledge about the traditional territories they are working in, supporting meaningful implementation of UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) and informed community engagement.

5. Tourists and Lifelong Learners:
Visitors to Canada and curious individuals can use TreatyX to move beyond superficial tourism. It allows them to understand the deep history of the places they visit, fostering a more respectful and informed travel experience. Museums, historical sites, and tour operators could integrate it into their offerings.
